Yoga Upanishads: Delving into Ancient Wisdom Posted on By The yoga upanishads are a vital part of the ancient Indian scriptures, and the Vedic Religion plays a key role in spiritual awakening for yogins. The Upanishads are a collection of profound insights that reveal the Yogatattva – the fundamental principles of yoga, beyond the physical postures and breathing techniques. Tattva is a Sanskrit word that means “truth” (or “element”) and is used in Hindu philosophy to explain the basic principles of existence. Yogatattva refers to principles that are specific to the philosophy and practice of yoga. The term “yogi” is widely used to describe anyone who practices yoga, regardless of their level. “Yogin,” however, is traditionally reserved for those who are more committed to the practice. The Upanishads are a treasure trove of yogatattva wisdom for the yogin. The Yoga Upanishads are a subset to the Minor Upanishads. They contain many verses and chapters which delve into mantra yoga and other topics such as pranayama and Pranava. The final chapter of this series is based on the Yoga Sutras, and presents practical applications for everyday life in verse. Understanding the Vedic texts will reveal yoga’s true depth, and show yoga to be more than a health trend. Yoga is a way to inner peace and self-understanding for a yogin. It also helps them reach the resonance of Pranava, or universal consciousness. yoga basics
